Getting your music from your iPhone to a computer

How to transfer your music tracks from an iPhone to a computer

So, you've got your music on an iPhone, but it is not the only device you would like to listen it on, right? So, let's figure out how to get your music from an iPhone to the computer, be it Mac or a PC.

Method #1: Using iTunes

Copy files toiTunes can copy the music you have purchased through the iTunes store from your iPhone onto the computer. To do that, just plug your iPhone into a computer with your iTunes launched.

After iTunes has shown the iPhone in the "Devices" section, right click on it and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the menu. Alternatively, you can do the same thing by going to File --> Transfer Purchases from "iPhone".

However, this feature only works for DRM files that are acquired through the iTunes Store. This method will not copy any other music files that were uploaded to the iPhone using the CD import features.

To copy music tracks that you did not purchase from the iTunes Store, you will have to synchronize Your iPod with iTunes with the option "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" turned on.

After synchronizing, you can copy these files from the iTunes media folder, which is usually located at the following:

     ●     On MacOS X: /Users/username/Music

     ●     On Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

     ●     On Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\

If you need to download your music to another computer without using iTunes, take a look at the other methods below.

Method #2: Jailbreaking + SSH copying

With this method, you obviously need to jailbreak your device first. No matter what jailbreak tool you use, just make sure you have the following components installed:

1.   BSD Subsystem

2.   Open SSH

After this, do the following:

1.  Download and install the SFTP application onto your computer. We recommend Filezilla

2.  Connect your iPhone to a home wireless network

3.  Find Your iPhone's IP address (in Settings --> Wi-Fi and select the network's name)

4.  Fire up your Filezilla, and connect it to your iPhone using its IP address. When asked for a username and password, enter "root" and "alpine" respectively. In some cases, the password will be "dottie.

5.  Ignore the warnings, accept the proposals to connect through port 22, and choose "Always trust this host"

6.  When connected, go to /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music/ and copy all of the folders named F01, F02, F03 and so on to your computer.

7.  The files in these folders will have some strange names that will tell you nothing about what kind of song is in each file. You will have to import these files into your iTunes library and then go to Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced-->"Keep iTunes Music folder organized," which will return the names for your songs.

8.   Copy your songs to any location/device that you need.

Method #3: External applications

Senuti (Mac only)

Senuti

This application is simple and powerful. It scans Your iPhone for music and video. Than You select music and videos which You want to copy to Your computer. Than click "Transfer" (the only button on toolbar). That is it - simple and powerful.

Lenogo (Mac, PC)

Lenogo

This is probably one of the most powerful applications out there for helping you copy your music from an iPhone to a computer. It will cost you $30, but the simplicity of its use is probably worth it.

All you have to do with Lenogo is plug your iPhone into your computer when Lenogo is launched. It will quickly recognize your iPhone. After that, click the "Query" button in the lower-left corner of the application window, and it will search for music tracks on your iPhone. After it is done searching, select the songs you want to download to your computer and click the "Copy" button (again in the lower-left corner).

Success may vary with external applications, however, as they arrive in dozens every year and Apple implements more and more protection against them.

Of course, there are some other applications that will take care of the task we discussed. Some of them include TouchCopy, gtkpod (Linux), Tansee iPhone Transfer, and iRip.
