What to do when your iPhone won`t turn on

As is the case with any complex device, the iPhone may sometimes display strange or erroneous behavior. Forgetting about small glitches, what needs to be done if your iPhone simply refuses to turn on?

If your iPhone will not turn on as usual, the best thing to do is not to panic. Try to figure out what is wrong with your device before running to the nearest AppleCare location (especially if your iPhone is jailbroken). Let's see what you can do.

Locate the problem

iPhone won`t turn on

In other words, make sure that it is your iPhone misbehaving and not willing to launch. Your charger may just be broken, and your iPhone could be out of power. The same is true if you charge the iPhone through a USB cable; check to see if it is working.

Checking both the USB cable and the charger is simple; just use them with another iPhone that is working. If the chargers are working fine, then move onto the following other checks.

It is also important to remember that charging the iPhone from a computer works only if you have:

   ●      connected the iPhone's USB plug into a USB 2.0 (or higher) port. Previous versions of USB  do not support charging the iPhone

   ●     connected the iPhone to a computer without any intermediaries. In other words, if the iPhone is connected to a USB 2.0 port located in your keyboard, it will probably not charge.

Proximity sensor problem

Your iPhone may have a proximity sensor problem. Proximity sensor is the part of the iPhone's hardware responsible for turning the device's screen off when you are holding the phone near your ear while talking.

When this sensor malfunctions, it can turn on your screen for no reason or keep it turned off when the iPhone is away from your face. This may lead you to think that your iPhone does not want to turn on. Solving this problem is more about software than hardware. So, if your proximity sensor behaves badly, do the following:

1.   Restart the iPhone (typically the screen will start working again)

2.   Go to Settings > General

3.   Tap Reset

4.   Tap Reset All Settings

This will delete all of the settings and restore them to the factory ones while leaving your data intact. Usually, this solves the problem with the proximity sensor.

Charging after a deep discharge

Discharging iPhone battery to an extremely low level may lead to a situation where the iPhone will just not turn on and seems unwilling to charge. In this situation, there is one clever trick you can use:

1.   Connect iPhone to your PC or Mac

2.   Launch iTunes

3.   Reboot computer without unplugging the iPhone

Your iPhone should be charging after this, and soon, you will be able to turn it on. There is no exact explanation for such a behavior, but it works in many cases.

Hard-resetting an iPhone

Hard-resetting an iPhone

This option works for a completely depleted battery as well as for some other cases when your iPhone refuses to cooperate with you. To hard-reset the iPhone, do the following:

1.   Charge Your iPhone for 15 minutes using a wall charger

2.   Try to turn the iPhone on

3.   If it does not turn on, press the "Power" and "Home" buttons until the Apple logo shows. Be patient; it will take you approximately 20 seconds of holding these buttons.

Resetting the iPhone using DFU

In some cases, if your iPhone does not turn on, you need to reset it through DFU mode. DFU stands for "Device Firmware Upgrade." In simple terms, this is the iPhone's mode of functioning when the phone is ready for new firmware to be loaded onto it.

To reset a misbehaving iPhone through DFU, you need to go through these steps:

1.   Turn on your computer and launch iTunes

2.   Connect your iPhone to the computer

3.   Simultaneously press the "Power" and "Home" buttons for 10 seconds. (You will probably need a watch that counts seconds for that)

4.   Your iTunes will notify you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK

5.   Go to your iPhone device in iTunes and choose "Restore"

After restoring the iPhone this way, it should work properly since all settings are erased and replaced with the default ones during the restoration, including those settings that caused your iPhone to be unresponsive. Unfortunately, during this process, your data will also be wiped out from the phone, so you will need to restore from a recent backup after this.

Apple Store, Apple Care or local repair shops

If the methods described above do not work, it is highly likely that You need to go to the Apple Store, AppleCare, or your mobile operator store. If your warranty is still valid, go to the Apple Store to get a replacement. If you have jailbroken, your iPhone, the warranty will be void, so if you did, you better bring the device to your local iPhone guru first.
